‘Meeting the needs of your most able pupils’ is a practical resource for supporting gifted and talented students – providing detailed background information about how to identify the most able geographers, and how resources and policies could be used to provide for them. The guidance is helpful for all teachers, whether at the ‘entry’ stage or ‘exemplary’ stage of the G&T quality standards.
Chapter 4 on ‘Classroom provision’ is particularly interesting as it gives valuable information and ideas of how to enrich and accelerate more able students, for example by introducing problem solving exercises or encouraging students to think about alternative futures. The information about developing skills such as explaining, thinking skills, and research is very useful, as it provides constructive ideas that could be applied to all students – not just G&T.
The book gives guidance in Chapter 6 for supporting more able Geographers outside of the classroom, for example during fieldwork, competitions, and links with other schools and businesses. The comprehensive appendices are a brilliant reference for departments to ensure they can monitor progress in meeting the needs of their gifted and talented students. In all, this book should be used by all Geography departments.
