The NACE Challenge Award Framework – provision for able, gifted and talented pupils

The Challenge Award Framework can be used by ALL schools, colleges and Local Authorities. The Challenge Award Framework provides a standard by which schools can audit and critically evaluate provision, informing planning for continuous whole school improvement. It is a whole-school self-evaluation tool that systematically involves all in the school community.

Key facts:

  • The Framework consists of ten mutually supportive and inter-related Elements which together describe quality provision.

  • Within each Element users will find objective criteria and suggested evidence of what constitutes effective practice. It not only gives benchmarks but, with the supporting documents, shows you how to improve.

  • The 10 Elements combine to help schools to improve provision, challenge all abilities, and meet the needs of able gifted and talented learners.

  • The Challenge Award Framework is being used in thousands of schools in England, in both the state and independent sectors, including academies.

  • The Welsh Assembly Government have adopted the 10 Elements of the framework as their National Quality Standards in Education for More Able and Talented.

  • It has been purchased by 85% of Local Authorities in England, informing their work with schools.

  • It is used internationally by schools in France, Romania, Russia, Singapore, The Netherlands, Denmark, Germany and New Zealand to evaluate and improve provision.

NACE ensures the framework is updated in the light of educational developments. The  2nd Revision Framework out now includes additional exemplification of evidence, process and impact so that schools can:

  • Strengthen leadership and ensure that school leaders are Leaders of Learning

  • Focus more precisely on meeting the needs of high performing MAG&T pupils through a 'challenge for all' approach.

  • Develop expertise and capacity at every level within schools and transfer of best practice

  • Narrow the Gap through maximising potential for MAG&T in vulnerable groups

  • Meet the requirements of the New Ofsted Framework particularly the need to have  sharper, impact focused self evaluation

National recognition:

The NACE Challenge award is recognised by external bodies, such as Ofsted, as a mark of quality provision. Awarded schools are from every phase of education from nursery to college, from inner-cities to shires and rural locations. ‘Outstanding’ schools and academies are using the Challenge Award framework and assessment to “test our self evaluation and provision.” Challenge Award schools sustain success and continue to improve - over 70% of Re-accredited Challenge Award schools are now judged by Ofsted to be 'Outstanding'.
