The NACE Challenge Development Programme offers a complete package for whole-school review and improvement to provision for more able learners, in the context of challenge for all.

The programme is supported through the NACE Challenge Framework, and can lead to formal accreditation through the NACE Challenge Award.

Here’s what schools say about the programme…

“At Portswood Primary it has never been about chasing another award. The point of working towards the Challenge Award has always been about the process and evaluating what we do. It provides a focus to think deeply about our teaching and learning in one area, but it always has transference to our teaching for all our pupils, not just the more able. NACE has been a part of Portswood for 12 years and we don’t ever see that changing.”

- Dr Keith Watson, principal for teaching and learning, Portswood Primary Academy Trust

“As a headteacher, I commend the Challenge Award to every school. I have found it tremendously powerful at all stages of our development, in this school and in other schools where I have had management responsibilities. Whether the school needs to develop from a low Ofsted category and low achievement to a high-performing school, or go beyond the outstanding category, the framework provides the challenge, the direction and the energy for all.”

- Paul Dick, headteacher of Kennet School and chief executive of the Kennet School Academies Trust

“The NACE Challenge Award Framework has been one of the most valuable tools we have used to analyse, reflect upon and improve provision in school. The framework is so rigorous that the impact is not just to explore all aspects of provision for the more able pupils, but to analyse and raise standards across the whole school, whilst providing the impetus for change. We recognise that the framework has its roots in driving up standards in provision for older pupils, but we as a nursery school have been able to put every aspect of the framework to good use and have genuinely felt the benefits of this permeate every level of our amazing school!”

- Angela Stanton, headteacher, Alfreton Nursery School

“The Challenge Award provides a robust and thorough framework from which to lead school development. Although the main focus is looking at provision for the most able pupils, the framework is underpinned by a challenge for all philosophy which has raised expectations for all pupils. The resources and training courses run by NACE are superb and provide additional support and guidance in understanding what good challenge looks like. I would thoroughly recommend the Challenge Award to any school.”

- Andrew Palmer, headteacher, Heycroft Primary School
