NACE training to support SCITT providers

Identifying and meeting the needs of more able learners

Providing expertise in the more able field to enrich your wider training programme, our dedicated SCITT course is available as a half-day workshop or three twilight sessions. This includes preliminary discussion with the course leader to determine the starting point and needs of delegates, and a short post-course report outlining delegate feedback and suggested follow-up actions or resources. Sessions can be delivered on-site or remotely.

Course overview

This course is designed to support trainee teachers in understanding how to identify and meet the needs of more able learners, drawing on the latest evidence in the field and providing practical examples that can be used in the classroom. By the end of the programme, trainees will have explored the issues, learned how to improve planning and delivery, and then be able to sustain effective teaching for more able learners. The course also references the ITT standards and links them to the Early Career Framework that trainees will be assessed by from September 2021 as NQTs.

Learning outcomes

  • Understand why it is important to meet the needs of more able pupils
  • Know how to get started with identification and planning
  • Understand how to meet the needs of more able learners in the classes you will teach
  • Investigate what current research means for more able learners and apply this in the classroom
  • Understand how to provide high-quality challenge and plan for it
  • Understand how ‘cutaway’ can be used in a variety of ways for effective provision
  • Understand the different ways progress can be measured for more able learners
  • Understand the importance of developing independence and metacognition to boost progress
  • Know where to go for further guidance and development

When delivered over three twilight sessions, the course will include practical gap tasks for trainees to complete between sessions, to support practical application of the course content. The course will also place trainees in a strong position to complete assignments with a focus on more able provision as part of their wider training programme.

Course costs

  • Up to 15 delegates: £895 +VAT
  • 16 - 25 delegates:* £1,475 +VAT

*Maximum of 25 delegates per course to support interactivity.

If delivered on-site, tutor expenses are also payable (travel and accommodation as appropriate).
