An educational equity gap exists across all phases of the English educational system. This gap tends to increase as children grow older. For disadvantaged more able learners, the gap between their potential and what they achieve is wider than for any other group.

In our schools, therefore, those leading on provision for disadvantaged learners must ensure a specific focus on disadvantaged more able learners.

Whether you are new to leading on Pupil Premium/disadvantage, or more experienced in the role, this one-day course will provide you with knowledge, guidance and practical advice, enabling you to effectively develop and embed high-quality provision for disadvantaged more able learners across a school within the wider ‘disadvantaged’ agenda.

Course content includes:

  • Why we need to focus on disadvantaged more able learners;
  • The forms of disadvantage young people may experience;
  • The key barriers that disadvantaged more able learners may face and how these impact attainment and aspiration;
  • How to monitor and evaluate the quality of provision for more able disadvantaged learners across the school;
  • How to support colleagues to understand their role and responsibilities in relation to disadvantaged more able learners;
  • Why the provision of cognitive challenge is essential for disadvantaged more able learners;
  • Approaches to policy which address the barriers to learning that disadvantaged more able learners may face;
  • Classroom pedagogy, successful interventions, and enrichment approaches to meet the needs of and raise outcomes for disadvantaged more able learners;
  • The role of leadership in shaping a culture of equity, excellence, and opportunity;
  • Common pitfalls of the role and how to avoid them.

There will also be opportunities throughout the day for you to share current priorities or concerns in relation to the role, and to plan your next steps in leading this important agenda.

If travel is a barrier to attendance, please contact cpd@nace.co.uk to arrange remote access.
