Member meetup: Developing intrinsic motivation Free meetup for NACE members Tuesday 16 June 2026 (10:00am – 3:00pm) The Blue Coat School, Birmingham B17 0HR Intrinsic motivation is key to preparing young people for lasting and meaningful success both within and beyond formal education. It goes hand in hand with developing a school culture in which cognitive challenge and desirable difficulty are embraced by and available to all. When developed effectively, internal motivation can help learners to avoid the pitfalls of focusing solely on external factors such as grades and rewards, and to navigate issues relating to perfectionism, pressure and wellbeing. It underpins learners’ agency, independence and ownership of learning, whilst contributing to a collaborative and supportive learning community in which all can flourish. This puts it at the heart of NACE’s vision: ensuring all young people have the opportunity to develop their abilities without limits – no matter what barriers to learning they may face and no matter what school they attend. Free for all staff at NACE member schools*, this event will explore: - The importance of intrinsic motivation across all phases of learning;
- Practical strategies to develop internal motivation as part of a whole-school culture of challenge for all;
- Potential pitfalls or challenges and how these can be addressed.
