Lighting the spark in Design & Technology
How can we inspire young learners to become confident designers, problem-solvers and innovators? This free live webinar, led by Lol Conway, Curriculum and Professional Development Manager at the Design & Technology Association, will explore how primary teachers can create exciting and meaningful Design & Technology experiences that spark curiosity and build strong foundations for future learning.
With a particular focus on high challenge and high engagement, the session will consider how
primary
D&T can provide rich opportunities for able and curious learners to think deeply, solve problems creatively and extend their thinking through purposeful design challenges.
Aimed at primary practitioners, the
webinar will focus on practical strategies to help pupils engage with D&T, develop key
skills and think creatively as they design, make and evaluate their ideas, while ensuring that learning opportunities encourage stretch, independence and innovation.
The session
will cover:

- Why Design & Technology is such a powerful subject for developing creativity, problem solving and real-world thinking

- How open-ended design challenges can inspire curiosity and provide appropriate challenge for able learners;
- The importance of the design process and how to embed it effectively in primary classrooms;
- Practical ways to create learning experiences that promote depth, independence
and creative thinking in D&T;
- Simple, practical ideas to make D&T lessons engaging, purposeful and achievable for all teachers while still offering stretch and challenge.

About the presenter
Lol Conway is a passionate Design and Technology educator with 14 years’ experience teaching students from Year 7 to Year 13. She spent seven years as Head of Department, leading the transformation of a struggling department into an outstanding faculty, and also served as a College/Pastoral Leader. Lol has worked across both primary and secondary phases, establishing and delivering D&T from EYFS through to KS2, and designing a cohesive curriculum that ensures smooth transition into KS3.
Currently, as Curriculum and Professional Development Manager at the Design & Technology Association, she supports teachers in delivering inclusive, engaging D&T, championing excellence and innovation in classrooms across all key stages.
