Ability is a fluid concept: it can be developed through challenge, opportunity and self-belief.
Addressing the needs of more able learners can raise achievement for a much wider group of learners in a school by increasing challenge for all. (from NACE's core principles)
Experiencing cognitive challenge in the classroom is the right of every child, supporting the identification and development of ability whilst strengthening learners’ resilience and self-belief. Leading a school-wide approach to challenge goes hand in hand with leadership of the more able agenda. At NACE we understand that this role may often seem overwhelming.
Whether new to the role or more experienced, this one-day course will guide and support you in understanding your role and leading each aspect of these interwoven areas to develop highly effective policy and provision. Successful practice in leading challenge and/or provision for the more able will be shared, and will demonstrate how to develop whole-school ownership and leadership of these agendas.
This course will provide answers to many of the questions commonly asked by those leading challenge and/or the more able, including:
- What does my role entail?
- How do I develop and share a vision for challenge and the more able?
- How do I support staff to understand and embrace the key principles of challenge and more able provision?
- How do I provide clarity for staff and parents about who the more able are?
- How do I develop a clear policy in partnership with other stakeholders?
- To what extent am I an ‘advocate’ for challenge and the more able?
- How can I gain a good overview of the needs of able students in my school?
- What information do I need to enable me to understand better the school’s development needs?
- How can I possibly monitor and evaluate the quality of challenge and more able provision across the school?
- How do I support colleagues to understand their role and responsibilities in relation to both challenge and more able pupils?
- What are the common pitfalls of the role and how do I avoid them?
There will also be opportunities throughout the day for you to share current priorities or concerns in relation to the role, and to plan your next steps in leading this important agenda.
