Making space for more able learners - Stage 3
Having recently completed the second stage of our 'Making Space for Able Learners' project, we are now moving on to the next stage where we will be studying how we can best support our disadvantaged more able learners.
There is no doubt that this group of learners are the most adrift of any group by the time they reach the end of Key Stage 4, and there is growing evidence that the gap is now widening further following the recent interruptions to schooling.

A fantastic opportunity for primary schools
New bespoke CPD programme for primary schools beginning in September 2024
To ensure as many schools can join as possible and maximise the benefit of networking and discussion amongst the delegate group, we have moved the first event to September, meaning the whole programme will now take place within the 2024/25 academic year.
Run by Bob Cox, author of the Opening Doors series, this programme consists of 5 events throughout the year – 2 in-person day sessions and 3 online twilights. The course is designed to support principles and strategies for ambitious english for every pupil in your school. Remote access for the in-person sessions is available for international schools and those for which travel is a barrier.

Harry Fletcher-Wood shows how teachers can use behavioural science techniques to increase motivation and improve behaviour. He offers clear guidance on topics such as using role models to motivate students, making detailed plans to help students act and building habits to ensure students keep going. We need to consider what habits are useful to build for more able learners and what role emerging knowledge of behavioural science can help motivation. That does not mean a blind adoption of these techniques but reflection upon what it means for effective learning in our contexts, with our more able learners.
